Chloé Nomade Eau de Parfum 50ml

Chloé Nomade Eau de Parfum was launched in 2018, created by Quentin Bisch of Givaudan — first appearance in the session and the creator of one of the most structurally unusual mainstream feminine launches of the decade. Nomade’s three-material disclosed pyramid — one material per tier, three materials total — is the most minimal note structure of any composition in the session by a considerable margin, and a deliberate compositional statement: where most mainstream fine fragrance discloses five to twelve materials across three tiers, Nomade discloses three, each doing the work of an entire tier alone. This structural minimalism reflects a specific compositional confidence — a willingness to let each material carry its tier completely without modifiers, smoothers or distractors — and results in a composition that is simultaneously easy to describe (three words: Plum, Freesia, Moss) and compositionally sophisticated in its construction (the balance between a warm honeyed fruity top, a clean airy floral heart and an earthy chypre base is achieved with no supporting materials in any tier). Chloé — the French fashion house founded in Paris in 1952 by Gaby Aghion (born in Alexandria, Egypt, 1921–2014), who introduced the concept of luxury ready-to-wear as a counterpoint to the couture establishment, and whose house has been led by a succession of celebrated designers including Karl Lagerfeld (whose early tenure at Chloé in the 1960s–70s preceded his Chanel appointment), Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo and Natacha Ramsay-Levi — launched its fragrance programme with the original Chloé (1975, created by Michel Almairac) and has built a consistently feminine, soft, natural-leaning fragrance identity across five decades. Nomade (2018) represents the most conceptually ambitious and most compositionally pared-back launch in the recent Chloé fragrance portfolio, a deliberate contrast to the fuller, more layered compositions in the Chloé EDP and Naturelle EDP ranges.

The opening of Mirabelle Plum alone is the most precisely sourced and most regionally specific fruit material in the session. Mirabelle — Prunus domestica subsp. syriaca, first named appearance in the session — is a small, golden-yellow plum cultivated primarily in the Lorraine region of northeastern France, where it holds Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status as ‘Mirabelle de Lorraine’ — one of the few fruit varieties in European fine fragrance with such a specific regional designation; its characteristic quality is quite different from red or purple plum: where those tend toward jammy, dark-fruit, slightly animalic registers, Mirabelle has a warm, honeyed, gently floral, delicately sweet stone-fruit quality with a slightly peachy roundness that makes it one of the most elegant and most specifically French fruity top notes in fine fragrance; in perfumery it is constructed as an accord from lactone compounds (the same gamma- and delta-lactone family underlying Apricot and Peach accords in the session), combined with slightly floral-honeyed materials to evoke the Mirabelle’s characteristic golden warmth. As the sole top-note material, Mirabelle carries the entire opening character of the composition alone — the most structurally confident single-material top in the session alongside Elie Saab Le Parfum’s Orange Blossom. The heart of Freesia alone is the most specifically and most cleanly modern floral heart in the Chloé feminine range. Freesia — Freesia species (Iridaceae family), most commonly Freesia refracta and related hybrids, native to the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa and extensively cultivated in the Netherlands for the cut-flower industry — first named appearance in the session as a primary heart material; the Freesia flower, like Muguet, Gardenia and Peony before it in the session, cannot be effectively extracted from the flower in quantities sufficient for fine fragrance use — the available natural extracts are minimal and the characteristic aroma compounds (including linalool-adjacent and citrus-floral materials) are more efficiently and consistently produced synthetically; the Freesia accord in fine fragrance is characteristically clean, fresh, slightly citrus-adjacent, slightly green-floral, gently fruity, with a quality that is simultaneously the most citrus-like of all the floral accords and the most distinctly floral of all the citrus-adjacent materials — an intermediate between the citrus and floral families that makes it particularly effective as a bridge between the Mirabelle Plum top and the Oak Moss base; alone in its tier, Freesia’s clean airiness provides the maximum floral space between the warmer, more lactonic Mirabelle above and the earthier, more resinous Oak Moss below. The base of Oak Moss alone completes the classical chypre triangle — Citrus (Mirabelle as a warm-fruity citrus-adjacent), Floral (Freesia), Moss (Oak Moss) — in its most minimal possible form. Oak Moss returning for its third session appearance (Estée Lauder White Linen, Versace Eros, now Chloé Nomade), here in its most prominent and most structurally exposed role: as the sole base material, Oak Moss is the entire foundation of the composition’s drydown, its characteristic earthy, green, slightly damp, forest-floor quality providing the compositional gravity that prevents Nomade from reading as simply a light fruity-floral rather than a fully developed chypre. The tension between Oak Moss’s ancient, allergen-adjacent earthiness (increasingly subject to IFRA restriction in its natural form, likely supplemented by modern synthetic alternatives) and Mirabelle and Freesia’s clean, contemporary lightness is the defining compositional tension of Nomade — old and new, earthen and airy, simultaneously present in the same composition.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Two sprays; Nomade has light to moderate projection with good longevity from the Oak Moss base. The Mirabelle Plum opening is immediately warm, honeyed and distinctively fresh; the Freesia heart arrives within ten minutes as the most clean and airy phase. The Oak Moss base lasts six to eight hours on skin, the composition’s chypre anchor sustaining the drydown long after the fruitier and more floral phases have settled.
