YSL M7 Eau de Toilette was launched in 2002, created by Jacques Cavallier and Annick Ménardo of Firmenich. Cavallier returning from his appearance on Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men EDT (2008); Ménardo — first appearance in the session — a Firmenich perfumer notable for Bulgari Black (1998, one of the most innovative masculines of the late 1990s) and Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin. M7 is the most historically significant masculine in the Oh So Luxe fragrance collection by compositional innovation: launched in 2002, it is one of the first mainstream Western luxury house fragrances to place Agarwood (Oud) as a central, explicitly named heart note, predating the mass-market Western oud trend by approximately five to eight years (the Western mainstream oud expansion is generally dated 2008–2012). It was commercially challenging at launch — Western fragrance audiences in 2002 had no established reference point for oud’s complex, animalic, smoky character — discontinued around 2010, and subsequently rereleased as a cult item for the fragrance community that had come to understand what Cavallier and Ménardo had done. Yves Saint Laurent — the house founded in Paris in 1961, whose masculine fragrance heritage runs from Pour Homme (1971) through Kouros (1981) — one of the great iconoclastic oriental masculines of the early 1980s — to M7 (2002) and the contemporary Libre EDP. M7 sits in the most adventurous position in that lineage.

The opening of Mandarin, Bergamot and Rosemary is deceptively conventional — a standard-seeming Mediterranean aromatic-citrus top that gives no immediate indication of what lies beneath. Rosemary — Salvia rosmarinus, first appearance in the session as a named top material — has a clean, fresh, slightly camphoraceous, herbal quality that alongside Mandarin and Bergamot creates the most accessible and normalising opening in the composition, functioning as a bridge between the familiar and the exotic heart. The heart of Patchouli and Agarwood (Oud) is the most compositionally bold and materially unusual heart in the entire masculine collection. Patchouli returning — encountered previously in feminine and darker masculine contexts — here in its most prominent and structurally central masculine role: its dark, earthy, slightly fermented, camphoraceous depth functioning as the compositional bridge between the citrus-herbal top and the oud’s complexity, and as a modifier that softens and contextualises the oud’s most challenging facets. Agarwood (Oud) — Aquilaria species, primarily Aquilaria malaccensis, the first named appearance in the session and one of the most expensive and complex natural raw materials in perfumery — is resinous heartwood produced when Aquilaria trees respond to infection by the mould Phialophora parasitica, producing a dense, dark resin as a biological defence. Only a small percentage of Aquilaria trees produce oud naturally; the material is listed on CITES Appendix II, harvested primarily in Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, and commands prices per kilogram that rival or exceed most other botanical materials in fine fragrance. Its olfactory character is simultaneously smoky, woody, leathery, balsamic, animalic, slightly medicinal and with a distinctive complex earthiness that makes it unlike any other fragrance material: it is not simply ‘woody’ or simply ‘smoky’ but occupies a register of its own. In M7, Cavallier and Ménardo deploy oud with Patchouli in a way that makes the heart legible and compelling to a Western audience that had not previously encountered the material — the Patchouli’s familiar earthiness contextualising the oud’s more challenging facets. The base of Myrrh, Cistus and Amber is the most ancient and historically resonant base in the session. Myrrh — Commiphora myrrha resin, first appearance in the session — one of the oldest known aromatic materials in human history, referenced in ancient Egyptian embalming, Hebrew biblical texts, and Greek and Roman perfumery; its warm, balsamic, slightly bitter, medicinal-resinous quality adds a ceremonial depth to the base that is unlike any synthetic material. Cistus (Labdanum, from Cistus ladanifer, the Mediterranean rock rose) — first named appearance in the session — produces a resinous absolute with a warm, ambery, slightly leathery, animalic-adjacent character that has been used in perfumery since antiquity as one of the primary natural Ambergris substitutes; alongside Myrrh it gives M7’s base an ancient, resinous, almost sacred quality that grounds the oud’s modernity in something far older. Amber the familiar resinous warmth completing the base.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, chest, neck. One to two sprays; M7 has moderate to good projection with exceptional longevity from the Myrrh, Cistus and Oud base. The Mandarin and Rosemary opening is deceptively fresh; the Patchouli and Oud heart arrives within fifteen to twenty minutes as the composition’s defining phase. The Myrrh and Cistus base lasts eight to twelve hours on skin. This is firmly an autumn, winter and evening fragrance — the Oud and resinous base become overwhelming in heat. For a YSL oriental masculine in a more accessible register, Kouros EDT is the house’s other landmark masculine oriental.
