Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men was launched in 2008 as the masculine counterpart to the women’s Diamonds EDP, created by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud — the most institutionally distinguished perfumer in the session. Working here in his Firmenich period before 2012, Cavallier Belletrud is now Master Perfumer at Louis Vuitton, one of the most prestigious perfumery positions in the world. His earlier career produced an extraordinary run of landmark compositions: L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme (1994, the original masculine that Pour Homme Intense flanks), and CK One (1994, co-created with Alberto Morillas), making 1994 one of the most remarkable single years in mainstream masculine fragrance history. The Diamonds for Men bottle — faceted diamond-cut glass with the metallic Emporio Armani eagle on the cap — is the most architecturally distinctive in the Emporio Armani masculine range, a direct reference to the diamond-faceted aesthetic of the paired women’s fragrance. The opening of Bergamot and Sichuan Pepper is the most distinctive and technically unusual top-note combination in the masculine collection. Bergamot returning in its familiar bright-citrus role. Sichuan Pepper — Zanthoxylum piperitum and related species, from the Rutaceae (citrus) family rather than the Piperaceae (true pepper) family, first appearance in the session — is one of the most distinctive fragrance and flavour materials in the world: its defining property is the numbing, tingling sensation it causes on contact, produced by hydroxy-alpha-sanshool activating tactile mechanoreceptors at around 50Hz, creating a literal buzzing, electric, almost carbonated quality that is simultaneously spicy and citrusy-floral. Ambrox (Ambroxan) — first named appearance in the session as a specific synthetic molecule — is one of the most significant materials in contemporary fine fragrance, a semi-synthetic derivative of Ambergris (the rare, historically prized whale-derived base material) with a warm, woody, slightly animalic, distinctly skin-like quality that is simultaneously clean and deeply sensual. It has an unusual olfactory property: a significant proportion of the population has very low sensitivity to Ambroxan due to specific receptor variation, perceiving it as nearly odourless, while others find it powerfully perceptible and characteristically warm; on those who can detect it, it gives the drydown a distinctive warm, skin-amplifying, almost bodily warmth that makes Diamonds for Men’s final phase its most distinctive.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays; Diamonds for Men has light to moderate projection with excellent drydown longevity from the Ambrox base. The Sichuan Pepper and Bergamot opening is immediate and electric; the Cocoa Bean and Cedarwood heart arrives within fifteen minutes. The Vetiver, Guaiac Wood and Ambrox base lasts six to eight hours skin-close — this is a fragrance whose most distinctive phase is the drydown rather than the opening.
