Gucci Rush was launched in 1999 — the same year as Dior J’adore, and a fragrance that could not be more different in aesthetic intent. Where J’adore was a celebration of classical floral luxury, Rush was a deliberate provocation: launched during Tom Ford’s era-defining tenure at Gucci, the period from 1994 to 2004 that rescued the house from near-collapse and transformed it into the most culturally talked-about fashion brand of the decade, Rush embodied everything Ford stood for — subversion of convention, unapologetic sexuality, and the kind of rule-breaking that makes comfortable people uncomfortable. The bottle makes the statement before the composition does: designed to resemble a VHS video cassette tape — the dominant domestic media format of the 1980s and early 1990s, entirely at odds with the conventional feminine bottle vocabulary of crystal, curves and floral motifs — it was one of the most deliberately confrontational fragrance packages of its era. The composition follows through: a chypre fruity built on a dense, warm, Patchouli-Vetiver base rather than the clean, airy structure of most 1990s feminine launches. The chypre family — one of the great classical fragrance structures, anchored by Bergamot top and a mossy, labdanum base, first defined by François Coty’s Chypre in 1917 — provides Rush with its depth and longevity. The opening of Peach, Freesia and Gardenia is warm and immediately distinctive. Freesia — making its first appearance in the session — is a light, slightly citrusy, clean floral note with a bright, almost effervescent quality; it is one of the freshest florals in perfumery, with a slight green, dewy character that gives it a particular lift at the top of compositions. Its presence alongside Peach’s warm, velvety sweetness and Gardenia’s creamy, dense richness — which distinguished the heart of Givenchy Amarige — creates a top accord of considerable range: fresh and bright from the Freesia, warm and fruity from the Peach, rich and dense from the Gardenia. The heart of Violet, Rose, Jasmine, Vanilla and Coriander is the most densely warm heart in the session since Amarige — Violet returning from Amarige and Boucheron EDT with its soft, powdery, slightly sweet quality; Coriander returning from CK Eternity, its warm, slightly citrusy, herbal spice adding a dry complexity to the sweetness of the vanilla heart; Vanilla in the heart rather than only the base, giving Rush its characteristic warmth and depth at the mid-stage of wear. The base of Patchouli, Vetiver and Woody Notes is the most emphatically structured in the collection since Aromatics Elixir — Patchouli in its earthier, darker expression rather than the clean contemporary interpretation it had in Gucci Guilty and Wonderlust; Vetiver returning from Boucheron EDT and Cool Water Woman with its cool, smoky, rooty depth; the two together giving Rush a base of genuine tenacity and warmth.

How to Apply

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Rush has moderate to strong projection and good longevity for an EDT — the chypre base structure gives it more staying power than most light EDTs. Two sprays is generally sufficient. The freesia and peach opening settles within fifteen minutes into the violet and jasmine heart; the patchouli and vetiver base lasts six to eight hours on skin with a warm, woody, slightly earthy trail.
