Versace Eros Eau de Toilette was launched in 2012, created by Aurélien Guichard of Givaudan — first appearance in the session and the creator of one of the most commercially successful masculine fragrance launches of the 2010s. Eros became a global best-seller almost immediately after launch, establishing a specific olfactory profile — cool-fresh Mint and citrus top, warm-ambery Ambroxan heart, vanilla-mossy base — that has since been widely referenced and imitated in the mainstream masculine category. The composition is named for Eros (Cupid in Roman mythology), the Greek god of love and desire, son of Aphrodite — a mythological reference consistent with Versace’s characteristic visual and narrative maximalism: the turquoise Medusa-embossed flacon is among the most immediately recognisable bottles in contemporary men’s fragrance, the turquoise colour referencing the Aegean Sea and the Medusa head (the Versace house symbol since Gianni Versace adopted it in the 1970s as a reference to the power of beauty) embossed on the cap. Versace — the house introduced in this session on Dylan Purple and Crystal Noir — built its masculine fragrance programme around Eros as the flagship, a composition whose combination of maximum freshness (Mint, Lemon, Green Apple) with maximum ambery warmth (Ambroxan, Madagascar Vanilla) and classical chypre depth (Oak Moss, Vetiver) represents a compressed full-fragrance-family statement in a single composition. The nine-material pyramid is among the most structurally ambitious in the Versace masculine range — moving across three distinct registers (fresh-citrus top, ambery-spiced heart, mossy-woody base) in a composition whose defining tension is between the opening’s cool aggressiveness and the base’s warm depth. For the EDP concentration: Versace Eros EDP is available at Oh So Luxe.
The opening of Mint, Italian Lemon and Green Apple is the most aggressively fresh and most explicitly cool top in the Versace masculine range — and the first Mint appearance in the session. Mint — most likely Mentha spicata (Spearmint) or a combination of Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita (Peppermint) — derives its characteristic cool, intensely aromatic, slightly medicinal quality from l-menthol and related monoterpenoid alcohols (carvone in Spearmint; menthol, menthone in Peppermint); in fine fragrance, Mint is used either as a natural essential oil or as a synthetic reconstitution of its principal compounds; its top-note quality is particularly fleeting (high volatility of menthol-adjacent compounds) but immediately and powerfully impactful on first application, giving Eros its characteristic cool burst that has become one of the most imitated masculine openings of the past decade. Italian Lemon returning in its familiar bright, clean top-note role; Green Apple — first named appearance in the masculine context, a fresh, slightly tart, slightly green synthetic accord (constructed from Styrallyl acetate and related esters alongside green-fruity materials) contrasting with the Lemon’s classic citrus brightness and the Mint’s cool intensity. The heart of Tonka Bean, Ambroxan and Geranium is the most technically modern and most materially significant heart in the Versace masculine range. Tonka Bean returning from its multiple masculine appearances, here in a specifically Ambroxan-forward context. Ambroxan — first named disclosure in the session as an explicitly listed heart material — is a synthetic analogue of Ambrox (also known as Ambergris Oxide), derived from the same labdane diterpene biosynthetic pathway as natural ambergris and related synthetic materials (Ambrofix from Versace Dylan Purple being a structurally adjacent but distinct compound); Ambroxan has a characteristic clean, slightly woody, slightly musky, warm, intimately skin-amplifying quality combined with exceptional diffusion — it is simultaneously a base-note fixative and a heart-note diffuser, capable of projecting the composition’s warmth from the skin across a wider radius than most base materials while also amplifying the wearer’s natural skin scent to create an intimately personalised quality; it has been one of the most widely deployed materials in mainstream fine fragrance since the 2000s, appearing in compositions ranging from Dior Sauvage (famously Ambroxan-heavy) to numerous niche and mainstream masculines; in Eros, Ambroxan’s function is to provide the composition’s remarkable longevity and projection for an EDT concentration while bridging the fresh-cool top and the warm-mossy base. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) returning from its multiple masculine appearances, here as a bridging material between the ambery warmth of Ambroxan and the green, slightly spiced heart register. The base of Madagascar Vanilla, Vetiver and Oak Moss is the most classically constructed masculine base in the Versace range. Madagascar Vanilla returning in its warm, enveloping base role; Vetiver returning from its multiple masculine base appearances; Oak Moss returning from its appearance in Estée Lauder White Linen — second appearance in the session — here in its most explicitly chypre-masculine context, the earthier, more directly green-mossy quality of Oak Moss in a masculine base contrasting with its more feminine-powdery-floral context in White Linen.
How to Wear
Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Three to four sprays; Eros EDT has strong projection from the Ambroxan heart and good to excellent longevity for an EDT concentration — the Ambroxan’s fixative quality extends wear significantly beyond typical EDT longevity. The Mint, Lemon and Green Apple opening is immediately cool and powerfully fresh; the Tonka Bean, Ambroxan and Geranium heart arrives within fifteen minutes as the composition’s warmest and most characteristic phase. The Madagascar Vanilla, Vetiver and Oak Moss base lasts six to ten hours on skin. For the richer, denser EDP version: Versace Eros EDP; for the Versace masculine range at Oh So Luxe: Dylan Blue Pour Homme EDT.
