Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Eau de Toilette 100ml for Women

The Acqua di Gio name is now associated principally with the men’s fragrance — created in 1996 by Alberto Morillas and one of the best-selling masculine fragrances in the world for three decades — but the feminine came first. Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio for Women was launched in 1995, created by Edouard Fléchier, a perfumer whose portfolio includes some of the most significant feminine fragrances of the latter 20th century: Dior Poison, YSL Opium (with others), and a range of fine fragrance work spanning four decades. The shared inspiration for both masculine and feminine was Pantelleria — the volcanic island halfway between Sicily and Tunisia, where Giorgio Armani had his private residence — a landscape of black volcanic rock, caper plants, fig trees and Mediterranean scrub surrounded by clear water, with a quality of light and heat quite unlike the more conventionally pictured Italian Mediterranean. The aquatic-floral family to which the women’s Acqua di Gio belongs was at its creative peak in 1995 — the same period that produced Cool Water Woman, and using many of the same structural tools: fruit and fresh florals in the top, a water-inflected heart, a clean woody-musk base. The women’s is warmer and more floral than the men’s, lacking the intense marine Calone quality that defines the masculine; it reads as Mediterranean summer rather than open ocean. The opening of Peony, Pineapple, Lemon and Musk Vodka Accord is bright, clean and immediately summery. Pineapple returns from Cool Water Woman, again in a Mediterranean-aquatic context; Peony returning from multiple appearances in the session with its soft, lightly powdery freshness. The Musk Vodka Accord is an unusual top-note element: not a natural material but a synthetic construction designed to give a clean, slightly sharp, effervescent quality to the opening — the ‘vodka’ descriptor referring not to alcohol but to a crisp, almost neutral sharpness that amplifies the freshness of the citrus and fruit without adding any sweetness or heaviness. The heart of Lily of the Valley, Jasmine and Hyacinth is the most distinctly 1990s-floral heart in the collection. Hyacinth — appearing for the first time in the session — is one of the most intensely and distinctively scented spring flowers, with a strongly floral, slightly green, watery character that is immediately recognisable; its presence in the heart gives Acqua di Gio for Women a cooler, more spring-garden quality that distinguishes it from the warmer, more classically Mediterranean florals elsewhere in the collection. Lily of the Valley returns from CK Eternity and Miss Dior EDP, its cool dewy freshness here amplified by the Hyacinth alongside it. Jasmine in this context is considerably lighter and fresher than the Jasmine Sambac of J’adore and Bloom — a cleaner, less indolic expression suited to the aquatic register. The base of Musk, Cedarwood, Sandalwood and Amber is warm, clean and long-lasting — the same woody-musk foundation that anchors the majority of the aquatic and fresh floral compositions in this collection, here with Amber adding a slightly warmer resinous note than the purely woody bases of the fresher compositions.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Two sprays is generally sufficient; the Musk Vodka and fruit opening is clean and immediate. The Hyacinth and Lily of the Valley heart develops fully within ten minutes; the Sandalwood and Amber base lasts six to eight hours on skin with a warm, soft trail.
