Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò Eau de Toilette, launched in 1996, is the original composition created by Alberto Morillas — one of the most commercially significant perfumers of the late 20th century, also responsible for Eternity for Men (Calvin Klein, 1989), CK One (1994) and numerous other landmark compositions. The 1996 EDT did not simply become one of the best-selling masculine fragrances in history; it created a template — the aromatic aquatic masculine built on citrus top, Calone-driven aquatic heart and clean woody base — that defined mainstream masculine perfumery for a decade and a half and continues to be referenced in countless compositions today. The inspiration was Pantelleria, the volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily between the Italian coast and Tunisia, where Giorgio Armani keeps a property; the island’s distinctive landscape — volcanic black stone, Mediterranean scrub, intense light, surrounding sea — is captured in the composition’s combination of Mediterranean citrus, aromatic herbs and aquatic freshness. The three Acqua di Giò Men expressions available at Oh So Luxe represent a clear progression from lightest to most intense: this EDT (1996) at the most transparent and clean, the Acqua di Giò EDP (2022) adding Cypress, Sea Notes and Incense for greater complexity and depth, and the Acqua di Giò Profumo (2015) adding Black Pepper, Geranium and Guaiac Wood for the most intense and evening-capable register. The opening of Bergamot, Neroli and Green Tangerine is the most immediately recognisable citrus top in the men’s collection — 30 years after launch, the Acqua di Giò opening remains one of the most imitated sequences in mainstream masculine perfumery. Bergamot and Neroli both returning in their most classically Mediterranean combination — Bergamot’s bright, slightly floral citrus alongside Neroli’s cleaner, more luminous quality; Green Tangerine adding a slightly unripe, green-citrus freshness that gives the opening its characteristic cool edge. The heart of Jasmine, Rosemary and Aquatic Notes is where the composition makes its defining structural statement. Rosemary — Rosmarinus officinalis, the aromatic Mediterranean herb, first appearance in this role in the session — has a clean, slightly medicinal, camphoraceous quality with a warm, herbal character deeply associated with the Mediterranean landscape; its presence in the Acqua di Giò heart alongside the Aquatic Notes is a direct olfactory reference to Pantelleria’s landscape of volcanic stone and aromatic scrub. The Aquatic Notes — the Calone-based synthetic marine accord that was the revolutionary element of the original 1996 formulation, giving the composition the sea-spray freshness that had not previously been achievable in fine fragrance at this level of naturalness — responsible for the EDT’s defining character and the template it created for the aquatic masculine category. The base of Cedarwood, Patchouli and White Musk provides the clean, dry woody finish. Cedarwood as the structural foundation; Patchouli in its lightest, most transparent expression, contributing depth and longevity without the dark earthiness of heavier Patchouli uses; White Musk providing the skin-close clean warmth that gives the drydown its characteristic freshly-showered quality and ensures the composition never feels heavy or dated.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two to three sprays; the EDT has lighter projection than the EDP or Profumo, ideal for daytime, office and warm-weather wear. The Bergamot and Green Tangerine opening is immediate; the Rosemary and Aquatic Notes heart arrives within ten minutes. The Cedarwood and White Musk base lasts four to six hours on skin — choose the EDP or Profumo when longevity and evening wear are the priority.
