Dior Poison Eau de Toilette was launched in 1985, created by Édouard Fléchier of Givaudan — one of the defining orientalist perfumers of the 1980s, whose subsequent work included Eternity for Women (1988, with Sophia Grojsman) and Dior Dune (1991). Poison arrived in 1985 as a deliberate provocation: its name, its dark red apple-shaped bottle, and its dense, maximal, almost aggressive oriental character were intentional departures from the softly floral feminine mainstream of the time. It became one of the most culturally controversial mainstream fragrances of the decade — documented reports of restaurants requesting that customers refrain from wearing it, its sillage so persistent and powerful that it became genuinely disruptive in enclosed spaces. That sillage — and the density of the composition that produces it — is not a flaw but the point: Poison was designed to be unavoidable, to announce its wearer before she entered a room and remain after she left. It is the most maximal, most densely structured, and most historically significant feminine in the Oh So Luxe fragrance collection. Dior — the house founded by Christian Dior in Paris in 1947, whose debut ‘New Look’ collection (with its nipped waist and full skirt) was a defining moment in 20th century fashion — has maintained one of the most consistently distinguished fragrance programmes of any fashion house. The 50ml size is the ideal introduction; the Poison EDT 100ml is available for the committed. Also from the Poison franchise at Oh So Luxe: Hypnotic Poison EDT 50ml — the 1998 flanker, softer and more accessible than the original but retaining the franchise’s characteristic dark depth.

The opening of Plum, Wild Berries, Pimento and Coriander is the darkest and most densely spiced top-note tier in the feminine collection — and the one furthest from any conventional citrus or fresh opening. Plum returning — here not as a background modifier but as the dominant top-note fruit material, its dark, jammy, slightly fermented quality establishing the composition’s register immediately. Wild Berries — a synthetic dark-fruit accord deepening the plum’s darkness further. Pimento — Pimenta dioica, allspice, first appearance in the session — the dried unripe berry of the allspice tree from the Caribbean and Central America, whose defining olfactory characteristic is a simultaneous evocation of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg without being precisely any of them; its warm, multi-spice quality gives the Poison top its characteristic rich, almost culinary spice warmth that is distinct from the clean, sharp heat of Black Pepper or the brightness of Pink Pepper. Coriander returning from Eternity for Men’s context, here in a dark-fruit spice top rather than a fougère structure. The heart of Jasmine, Rose, Carnation, Cinnamon and Incense is the most opulent and densely layered floral-spice heart in the feminine collection. Jasmine and Rose returning in their grandest and most richly deployed context of the session — Poison’s floral heart is not a delicate or transparent floral but a dense, heady, intensely blooming cluster. Carnation — Dianthus caryophyllus, first named appearance in the session as a specific heart material — is one of the classic floral-spice materials in perfumery, with an inherent eugenol content (eugenol being the primary aromatic component of clove) that gives it a warm, spicy, slightly clove-inflected floral quality; it bridges the floral register of Jasmine and Rose and the spice register of Cinnamon in a way that no purely floral or purely spice material could. Cinnamon — Cinnamomum verum, the warm, sweet, slightly sharp spice — reinforces the Carnation’s eugenol character through its own related chemical profile, creating a natural spice-floral reinforcement that gives the Poison heart its characteristic warm, slightly clove-and-cinnamon-inflected floral density. Incense in the heart adding its smoky, resinous structural depth. The base of Amber, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Vanilla provides the warm, resinous, long-lasting oriental foundation. Amber the resinous warmth; Sandalwood the creamy woody depth; Vetiver the earthy grounding; Vanilla the sweet, balsamic, skin-close longevity that gives Poison its hours-long trail.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. One to two sprays maximum; Poison has exceptional sillage and longevity, and in the EDT concentration projects further than almost any other feminine in the collection. The Plum and Pimento opening is immediately dense and present; the Jasmine, Carnation and Cinnamon heart arrives within fifteen minutes in full intensity. The Amber, Sandalwood and Vanilla base lasts eight to twelve hours on skin — this is firmly an evening and cold-weather fragrance. For a softer, more approachable entry into the Poison franchise, begin with the Hypnotic Poison EDT 50ml.
