Elie Saab Le Parfum Royal was launched in 2019, created by Maïa Lernout of Givaudan — first appearance in the session and a French-Belgian perfumer whose work at Givaudan is concentrated in the contemporary feminine oriental register. Royal is explicitly framed as a reimagining of the Elie Saab fragrance signature: where Le Parfum (2011, Francis Kurkdjian) was built around a single Orange Blossom heart — the most architecturally minimal and most brand-defining heart in the Elie Saab range — Royal replaces the Orange Blossom with a three-material heart of Turkish Rose Absolute, Bulgarian Rose and Lebanese Neroli, retaining Patchouli as the base anchor while adding Indian Sandalwood, Amber and Vanilla for a richer, more voluminous oriental base. The eight-material pyramid of Royal is the most geographically specific in the Elie Saab range at Oh So Luxe: five of the eight disclosed materials carry explicit regional or origin qualifications (Mandarin Essence, Turkish Rose Absolute, Bulgarian Rose, Lebanese Neroli, Indian Sandalwood) — a level of provenance-specificity that is the highest in any Elie Saab product in the session and among the highest in any product in the session overall. Elie Saab — returning from his introduction in the Le Parfum entry earlier in the session — the Lebanese-born Beirut couturier whose fashion identity of exceptional bridal and evening wear precision is directly expressed in Royal’s Lebanese Neroli (a specifically Levantine Citrus aurantium material) and its explicitly regal register. The jewel-like bottle with royal blue detailing — contrasting with Le Parfum’s more understated parchment-and-gold aesthetic — is the most overtly ceremonial visual identity in the Elie Saab range at Oh So Luxe, the blue referencing both royal tradition and the Mediterranean sky above Beirut.
The single-material top of Mandarin Essence — Mandarin as the sole top note for the second time in the session (after the Boss Bottled Parfum’s Mandarin-Incense pairing, here alone) — gives Royal the most restrained and most immediately warm citrus opening in the Elie Saab range: Mandarin Essence (cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus reticulata, the Mandarin or Tangerine, most commonly the Blanco or Satsuma variety for fine fragrance use) is the warmest, sweetest and most honeyed of the commonly used citrus top materials — less sharp and more rounded than Bergamot, less bitter than Grapefruit, less clean-bright than Lemon — making it the most naturally transitional citrus into a Rose-and-Neroli floral heart. The three-material heart of Turkish Rose Absolute, Bulgarian Rose and Lebanese Neroli is the most geographically differentiated and the most dual-sourced heart in the session. Turkish Rose Absolute and Bulgarian Rose appearing together in a single heart tier — the first dual-sourced Rose in the session — represent the two principal fine fragrance Rose cultivation regions: Turkey (primarily Isparta Province, where Rosa × damascena is cultivated in the Lake District highlands, producing an absolute with a slightly spicier, slightly more honeyed character) and Bulgaria (the Valley of Roses/Dolina na Rozite in the Kazanlak region of the Balkan Mountains, historically the world’s most celebrated Rosa × damascena cultivation terroir, producing an absolute with a rich, warm, slightly honeyed, deeply classic rose quality); the combination of both Absolute forms in a single heart tier — Turkish for its honeyed spiced warmth, Bulgarian for its classical rose richness — creates the most materially complete and the most geographically comprehensive Rose construction in the session. Lebanese Neroli — first named appearance in the session as a specifically Lebanese-designated Neroli (Citrus aurantium blossom absolute or essential oil from Lebanon, most likely from the Beqaa Valley or coastal groves) — representing the orange blossom of the Levant; Lebanon has a significant Citrus aurantium cultivation tradition, and Lebanese Neroli has a characteristic quality shaped by the Mediterranean-Levantine climate and terroir: slightly warmer, slightly more honeyed and slightly more intensely floral than the Moroccan or Tunisian variants, with a quality that bridges the cool freshness of classic Mediterranean Neroli and the richer warmth of the Lebanese orange blossom tradition; as a Neroli in the heart (rather than a top-note Neroli as in many classical compositions), Lebanese Neroli functions here as a white floral heart material alongside the two Roses, contributing its honeyed citrus-floral quality to bridge the Rose pair and the Patchouli base. The four-material base of Patchouli, Indian Sandalwood, Amber and Vanilla is the most provenance-specific and the most richly constructed base in the Elie Saab range. Patchouli returning as the Elie Saab signature base anchor (present in Le Parfum and retained in Royal as the direct link between the two compositions). Indian Sandalwood — Santalum album (Santalaceae), the genuine Mysore or Karnataka Sandalwood of southern India, returning with its explicit Indian designation for the second time in the session — here the most expensive and most provenance-specific woody base material in the Elie Saab range, its characteristic creamy, smooth, milky, warm, slightly sweet quality combining with Patchouli’s earthy depth and Amber’s warm enveloping resonance to create a base of exceptional richness and longevity. Amber and Vanilla returning in their familiar warm enveloping roles, completing the amber-oriental base character that gives Royal its ‘amber floral chypre’ classification.
How to Wear
Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Two sprays; Le Parfum Royal has strong sillage and exceptional longevity from the Patchouli, Indian Sandalwood and Amber base, with a lasting trail of eight or more hours on skin. The Mandarin Essence opening is immediately warm and honeyed; the dual-Rose and Lebanese Neroli heart arrives within ten to fifteen minutes as the most richly floral and most formally grand phase. For the original and most architecturally minimal Elie Saab feminine: Le Parfum EDP (2011, Francis Kurkdjian, Orange Blossom sole heart).
