Alfred Sung EDT was launched in 1986 — the same era that gave perfumery Poison, Giorgio Beverly Hills and Obsession, a decade defined by bold, complex, unapologetically rich feminine constructions that bore little resemblance to the lighter, more transparent fragrances that have dominated the market since the mid-2000s. Alfred Sung is the quieter, more refined entry in that generation: not the booming, room-filling excess of its contemporaries, but a classically constructed floral of genuine complexity and craft. The bottle was designed by Pierre Dinand — the flacon designer responsible for YSL Opium, Givenchy L’Interdit and dozens of the great fragrance bottles of the 20th century — and its clean, architectural simplicity reflects the restraint of the fragrance inside relative to its era. It remains one of the most generously sized and genuinely classic propositions in the collection.

The opening is the most complex top accord in the session: Orange, Mandarin, Bergamot and Lemon provide the citrus brightness, but it is Galbanum and Hyacinth that distinguish this from every other floral written today. Galbanum is a green, slightly bitter, resinous note extracted from a Persian plant — dry, sharp and unmistakably of its era, it appears in Chanel No. 19, Vent Vert and the great green florals of the 1970s and 80s and almost nowhere in contemporary perfumery. Here it gives the opening its particular cool, slightly austere green character that prevents the citrus from reading as merely sweet. Hyacinth adds a heady, intensely floral greenness — the smell of spring bulbs just cut, damp and fresh. Together, Galbanum and Hyacinth make this the most classically structured top accord in the collection. The heart of Osmanthus, Jasmine, Iris and Lily of the Valley is equally considered: Osmanthus is a Chinese flowering tree whose petals carry a unique apricot-and-peach sweetness that sits between floral and fruity — quite unlike any Western flower and one of the most beautiful and underused naturals in perfumery; Jasmine and Lily of the Valley — both recurring across the session in D&G The One, Burberry Touch and Burberry London — here anchor the heart in classic feminine floral tradition; Iris adds the cool, powdery elegance that it brought to Tiffany Rose Gold. The base of Vanilla, Orange Wood, Sandalwood, Amber and Vetiver is warm, woody and slightly earthy — Vetiver in particular adding a cool, smoky, rooty depth that grounds the whole composition. How to Apply

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. The galbanum and citrus opening settles within twenty minutes into the osmanthus and jasmine heart — allow time for the full complexity of the composition to develop. The vetiver and sandalwood base lasts six to eight hours on skin with a warm, softly earthy trail.
