Alfred Sung Homme, launched in 1993, was created by Sophia Grojsman — one of the most significant perfumers of the late 20th century, a Belarusian-born perfumer who spent her career at IFF and whose portfolio includes Lancôme Trésor (1990), Calvin Klein Eternity (1988), YSL Paris (1983) and YSL Yvresse (1993). Grojsman is particularly associated with the dense, rich, multi-material feminine compositions of the late 1980s and 1990s; Homme is one of her relatively rare masculine creations, and it demonstrates the same characteristic generosity with materials: the pyramid contains 27 named components across three tiers, making it the most comprehensively documented composition in the collection at Oh So Luxe. Alfred Sung is a Hong Kong-born Canadian fashion designer based in Toronto, whose fragrance line — launched with the original Alfred Sung EDT in 1986 — belongs to the classic North American designer fragrance tradition that produced many of the defining scents of the 1980s and early 1990s. Sung Homme (1993) sits firmly in the aromatic fougère category that dominated masculine perfumery in that decade: structured around a herbal-citrus top, an aromatic-floral heart anchored by Geranium and Carnation alongside the Aldehydes, and a classic Oakmoss-Leather-Vetiver base. The opening of Bay Leaf, Petitgrain, Lemon, Bergamot, Sage, Galbanum, Basil, Artemisia, Caraway, Pepper and Juniper Berries is the most expansive top in the collection — eleven materials establishing an immediately complex, multi-layered aromatic-green-citrus opening that is characteristic of the most ambitious masculine compositions of the early 1990s. Petitgrain — distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree (the same Citrus aurantium that gives Neroli from the flowers and Bergamot from the rind), first appearance in the session — has a dry, woody, slightly bitter, herbaceous citrus character quite distinct from the sweeter floral Neroli or the brighter rind-derived Bergamot; it grounds the citrus opening with a green, woody quality. Galbanum — the resin of Ferula galbaniflua, an Iranian umbelliferous plant, first appearance — is one of the most intensely green and bitter materials in perfumery: sharp, slightly piney, raw and vegetal, with an almost harsh freshness that gives Galbanum-containing compositions an immediately distinctive, intensely natural, pre-synthetic character; it was used extensively in classic 1970s and 1980s green fragrances and its presence here signals the composition’s classical orientation. Artemisia — the genus including wormwood, tarragon and mugwort, first appearance — provides a bitter, herbal, slightly medicinal aromatic quality; alongside Sage and Basil it completes a herbal trio that gives the top its distinctly aromatic, pre-millennial character. Caraway — the seed spice Carum carvi, its warm, slightly sweet, aniseed-adjacent character — appearing in both top and heart, bridging the two tiers. Bay Leaf, Pepper and Juniper Berries adding further aromatic warmth and spice to the already complex top. The heart of Rose, Jasmine, Aldehydes, Carnation, Geranium, Pine Tree Needles and Spicy Notes introduces the floral and synthetic elements that define the composition’s classical 1990s character. Aldehydes — first appearance in the session — are synthetic molecules that, when first deployed in Chanel No. 5 (Ernest Beaux, 1921), transformed perfumery by giving compositions a soapy, clean, slightly metallic, powdery-abstract quality that amplifies and extends the other materials; their presence in Homme alongside Carnation and Geranium is a direct reference to the classical masculine floral-aldehyde tradition. Pine Tree Needles — first appearance — sharp, clean, resinous, giving the heart its forest-floor freshness alongside the florals. The base of Cedar, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Leather, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Musk and Fir is the most classically constructed base in the masculine section of the collection — eight materials covering the full spectrum of the classic aromatic fougère base: Oakmoss providing its characteristic earthy, chypre-adjacent depth; Vetiver its rooty earthiness; Leather its warm, dry animalic quality; Sandalwood its creamy warmth; Patchouli its dark earthiness; Fir its resinous forest quality; Cedar and Musk providing the structural framework and skin-close finish.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays; Homme has the moderate projection typical of the early 1990s fougère style — present without being aggressive. The herbal-citrus opening is immediate and complex; the Aldehyde-Geranium-Carnation heart arrives within fifteen minutes. The Oakmoss and Leather base lasts seven to nine hours on skin with a warm, earthy, classically masculine trail.
