Clinique Aromatics Elixir Eau de Parfum

Clinique Aromatics Elixir was launched in 1971 and created by Bernard Chant — the perfumer also responsible for Cabochard and Aramis, two of the most enduring and respected fragrances of the 20th century. It is the oldest fragrance in the Oh So Luxe collection and, by some considerable distance, the most polarising. Aromatics Elixir is a fragrance that people tend to feel strongly about: those who love it wear it for decades as an uncompromising signature; those who don’t find it overwhelming from the first spray. It is not a fragrance designed for broad accessibility or gentle wearability — it is a fully realised chypre of the old school, built on materials and a construction philosophy that largely disappeared from mainstream perfumery after IFRA restrictions on oakmoss, the cornerstone of the chypre family, came into force.

The top opens with Aldehydes alongside Chamomile, Clary Sage, Coriander, Geranium, Lemon Verbena, Brazilian Rosewood and Bergamot — eight top notes, anchored by the Aldehydes that give this opening its distinctly vintage character. Aldehydes are synthetic materials that amplify and lift fragrance accords with a soapy, slightly metallic, wax-and-light quality that is the defining characteristic of Chanel No. 5 and many of the great feminine fragrances of the 1920s through 1970s; they are used rarely in contemporary perfumery precisely because they signal vintage so immediately and so unmistakably. Chamomile adds a slightly bitter, apple-like herbal quality; Clary Sage brings a clean, slightly musty warmth familiar from Versace Crystal Noir EDT and Montblanc Legend Red but here in a far more assertive context. The heart of Carnation, Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Orris Root, Jasmine, Tuberose and Orange Blossom is the richest and most densely constructed floral heart in the session — seven notes, each contributing to a full, complex, emphatically traditional feminine floral that has no contemporary equivalent. Tuberose in particular — the most intensely heady and narcotic white floral in perfumery, creamy, slightly rubbery and overwhelmingly rich — combined with Carnation’s clove-like spice and Ylang-Ylang’s deep tropical floral sweetness, creates a heart of formidable presence. The base of Oakmoss, Patchouli, Incense, Vetiver, Sandalwood and Musk is the darkest and most complex base written across both sessions — Oakmoss providing the earthy, green, forest-floor depth that defines the chypre family; Incense adding a smoky, resinous depth; Vetiver its cool, smoky, rooty groundedness as it did in Alfred Sung EDT. This is a fragrance that lasts all day and into the next morning on clothing — a single application is sufficient.

How to Apply

Apply sparingly to pulse points — one spray on the wrist or neck is sufficient. Aromatics Elixir has exceptional projection and longevity — it will linger on skin for twelve hours or more and on clothing considerably longer. New wearers should start with a single spray and allow the full complexity of the composition to develop over two to three hours before judging it.
