Hugo Boss The Scent for Him was launched in 2015 alongside its feminine counterpart The Scent for Her, created by Laurent Bruyère of Firmenich. The composition is structurally one of the most minimal in the Boss masculine range — five notes across three tiers, with a single note in both the top and heart — and that minimalism is deliberate: where the Boss Bottled franchise (led by Boss Bottled EDT with its ten notes across three tiers) builds its character through layered complexity, The Scent builds its character through intensity. The entire composition’s distinctiveness rests on one material: Maninka Fruit, the sole heart note, which is the most exotic and unusual fragrance material in the Boss masculine range. Maninka Fruit — from Ficus gnaphalocarpa, the savannah fig native to the Sahel region of West Africa — has a complex, simultaneously sweet, slightly fermented, rum-adjacent, tropical fruit character with a faintly honeyed quality that prompted Bruyère to describe it as having an aphrodisiac dimension; it was at launch an exclusive material sourced through Firmenich’s naturals programme from West Africa. The ‘rum and passion fruit’ experiential description is the most useful shorthand: the Maninka has that tropical, slightly intoxicating, warm sweetness that makes the heart of The Scent simultaneously fruity and dark, accessible and unusual. The base of Leather, Amber and Woods provides the warm, dark, grounding depth that frames the Maninka’s exotic sweetness. How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays; The Scent has moderate projection with good longevity from the Leather and Amber base. The Ginger opening is immediate and warm; the Maninka Fruit heart arrives within ten minutes and dominates the composition’s character throughout its development. The Leather and Amber base lasts six to eight hours on skin — this is distinctly an evening and cooler-season fragrance; for Boss in warmer weather, the Boss Bottled EDT is the daytime choice.
