Burberry Hero Eau de Toilette was launched in 2021, created by Aurélien Guichard of Givaudan — a significant contemporary perfumer whose portfolio includes Montblanc Legend and, in collaboration with Jean-Claude Ellena, Terre d’Hermès, one of the most critically admired masculine compositions of the 2000s. Hero’s creative concept is precisely stated: the scent of a forest by the English coastline, the Bergamot and Juniper opening evoking the salt-and-green of the meeting point between woodland and sea. Burberry — founded in Basingstoke in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, whose invention of gabardine fabric and subsequent design of the trench coat (adopted by the British Army in 1914) are the house’s founding contributions to both function and style — is one of the most significant British fashion houses, and Hero is positioned as a distinctly British masculine: restrained, clean, structurally considered, without the Mediterranean warmth or oriental depth of many of the other masculines in the collection. The opening of Bergamot alone — a single-material top tier, the most minimal opening in the masculine collection — is a deliberate compositional choice that places the full weight of the first impression on one material. Bergamot returning in its cleanest, most unadorned context: no Lemon, no Grapefruit, no Neroli alongside it; just Bergamot’s bright, slightly floral citrus brightness, giving the opening an immediate freshness that transitions rapidly into the heart. The heart of Juniper and Black Pepper is the most decisively forest-and-coast combination in the session. Juniper returning from Alfred Sung Homme, where it appeared among eleven top note materials; here in the heart with a far more prominent role — its fresh, slightly resinous, gin-adjacent piney quality is the heart’s dominant character, the material that most directly evokes the conifer forest of the composition’s creative concept. Black Pepper returning in the heart, here in its clearest and most direct role: sharp, slightly citrusy, dry, providing the spicy warmth that gives Hero its woody spicy classification and the contrast to the Juniper’s green freshness. The base of Atlas Cedarwood, Himalayan Cedarwood and Virginia Cedarwood is the most architecturally distinctive base in the masculine collection — and the element that most rewards attention. Three species of Cedar (one technically a Juniper, but used as Cedar in perfumery), three growing regions, three meaningfully different olfactory characters deployed together to build a Cedar accord of far greater complexity than any single Cedar source could provide. Atlas Cedarwood — Cedrus atlantica, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco — is the most commonly used Cedar in fine fragrance: warm, slightly powdery, woody, with a dry, slightly balsamic quality that gives the base its warm structural foundation. Himalayan Cedarwood — Cedrus deodara, the deodar cedar, from the Himalayas; ‘deodara’ from the Sanskrit ‘devadaru’, timber of the gods, indicating the cultural reverence in which this tree is held across South Asian and Himalayan traditions — is slightly softer, more creamy and less dry than Atlas; it gives the base a warmer, rounder, more enveloping quality. Virginia Cedarwood — technically Juniperus virginiana rather than a true Cedar, the Eastern Red Cedar of North America, the wood historically used for pencil manufacturing — has the most distinctive character of the three: sharp, dry, clean, pencil-shaving adjacent, with a crispness that counterbalances the warmth of the Atlas and Himalayan Cedars and gives the base its characteristic clean, dry precision. Together the three create a Cedar accord that is simultaneously warm and dry, soft and sharp, grounded and airy.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays; Hero has moderate projection and good longevity from the triple Cedar base. The Bergamot opening is immediate and brief; the Juniper and Black Pepper heart arrives within ten minutes. The three-Cedar base develops over the first hour into the composition’s most distinctive phase, lasting six to eight hours on skin with a clean, dry woody trail.
