Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Eau de Toilette

Viktor & Rolf is a Dutch fashion house founded in 1993 by Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, known for conceptual and deliberately subversive work in both fashion and fragrance. Their two most commercially significant fragrances — Flowerbomb (2005) and Spicebomb (2012) — are positioned as conceptual opposites: Flowerbomb as a feminine floral explosion, Spicebomb as a masculine spice explosion. The naming is literal and the bottle designs make the concept explicit: Flowerbomb arrives in a faceted grenade shaped like a perfume bottle; Spicebomb in a chrome fragmentation grenade with the atomiser as the pin. Olivier Polge — who later became Chanel’s in-house master perfumer, succeeding his father Jacques Polge in 2015 — created Spicebomb with Yann Vasnier in 2012. It is among the most densely constructed mainstream masculine EDT compositions in the collection, with twelve named materials across three tiers and a note pyramid that spans from fresh citrus and resin through hot and aromatic spice to leather, tobacco and vetiver. The opening of Bergamot, Grapefruit and Cinnamon Leaf is the most immediately spiced citrus top in the session. Bergamot and Grapefruit provide the familiar fresh citrus brightness of the masculine EDT opening; Cinnamon Leaf — the leaf rather than the bark, which has a slightly greener, cooler, more aromatic character than the warmer, sweeter bark cinnamon that returned from Boucheron and Loewe Solo — introduces the spice register immediately from the first impression rather than waiting for the heart to develop. The heart of Lavender, Pimento Berries, Saffron, Elemi and Pink Pepper is the most complex five-note heart in the masculine section of the collection. Lavender in the heart rather than the top is an unusual placement — typically a top note in the fougère tradition — here serving as the aromatic bridge between the fresh citrus opening and the hot spice cluster, its clean, slightly camphoraceous quality softening the transition. Pimento Berries (Allspice, Pimenta dioica) — first appearance in the session — are the dried berries of a Caribbean and Central American tree whose aroma combines Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg simultaneously, giving a single material the complexity of three spices; its presence in the heart alongside Saffron and Pink Pepper makes this the most densely spiced heart in the collection. Saffron returning from Replica Under the Stars, here in a warmer, more dominant context — its leathery, slightly metallic, intensely warm character amplified by the Pimento and Pink Pepper surrounding it. Elemi — first appearance in the session — is the resin of Canarium luzonicum, a tree native to the Philippines, with a fresh, slightly citrusy, piney, frankincense-adjacent character; it gives the heart its one moment of transparent, resinous freshness amid the warmth of the surrounding spices. The base of Vetiver, Fir Balsam, Tobacco Accord and White Leather Accord gives Spicebomb its lasting depth. Vetiver returning from Gucci Rush, here in a masculine context at its most earthy and rooty. Fir Balsam — first appearance — the resinous material of Abies fir species, with a clean, slightly sweet, resinous forest quality that gives the base its cool, coniferous depth alongside the Vetiver’s earthiness. Tobacco Accord returning from the session’s oriental masculines, here alongside White Leather Accord — a cleaner, more contemporary leather than the darker leather of 1 Million — giving the base a warm, complex drydown with genuine tenacity.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays maximum; Spicebomb has strong projection and exceptional longevity. The Bergamot and Cinnamon Leaf opening is immediate and spiced; the full Pimento and Saffron heart arrives within fifteen minutes. The Vetiver, Tobacco and Leather base lasts ten to fourteen hours on skin — the most tenacious composition in the masculine section of the collection.
