Calvin Klein Escape Eau de Parfum

Calvin Klein Escape was launched in 1991 — the same period as Alfred Sung EDT and Clinique Aromatics Elixir in terms of era, though its character is quite different: where those fragrances are complex and demanding, Escape is generous, warm and immediately accessible. It belongs to the CK house aesthetic of clean, wearable American fragrance — the house that gave perfumery CK One and Obsession — applied to a summer garden concept with a fruit-forward construction that was ahead of its time in 1991. The golden cylindrical bottle, unchanged across several decades, reflects the warmth of the fragrance inside.

The opening deploys five fruits simultaneously — the most abundant fruit top accord written across both sessions: Apricot, Mandarin Orange, Apple, Lychee and Peach. Each contributes a distinct character: Apricot is warm, slightly honeyed and velvety, closer to Osmanthus in profile than the more common citrus fruits; Apple is watery, tart and slightly green, a cool contrast to the warmer fruits alongside it; Lychee brings the same delicate, floral-sweet fruitiness it added to Tiffany Rose Gold and Jimmy Choo I Want Choo; Mandarin and Peach provide the warm citrus and velvety sweetness that bridge the opening into the heart. The heart of Jasmine, Rose, Carnation and Clove is the most specifically spiced floral heart in the session. Carnation is naturally clove-like in character — it contains eugenol, the same aromatic molecule responsible for the warm, spicy quality of cloves — and pairing the two creates a concentrated, dry, warm spice-floral accord that gives Escape its distinctive character and distinguishes it from the softer floral hearts of Burberry London or Estée Lauder Beautiful. The base of Sandalwood, Musk, Cedar, Amber and Vanilla is warm, woody and clean — Cedar making its first appearance in the session alongside the familiar Sandalwood, Amber and Vanilla, adding a dry, pencil-shaving woody note that gives the base its structure.

How to Apply

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. The five-fruit opening is vivid and immediate; the carnation and clove heart develops within fifteen to twenty minutes into something warmer and spicier than the opening suggests. The sandalwood, cedar and amber base lasts six to eight hours on skin with a warm, softly spiced trail.
