Launched in 2014 to mark Bvlgari’s 130th anniversary and crafted by perfumer Alberto Morillas, Bvlgari Man In Black is one of the most consistently well-received men’s fragrances of the past decade — and the opening tells you why immediately. Natural Rum and Luminous Spices hit with a warmth that’s inviting rather than aggressive, slightly sweet but underpinned by the kind of spice that signals this isn’t going to stay gentle for long. It’s a bold, confident opening that doesn’t need to shout.
The heart is where Man In Black becomes genuinely interesting. Tuberose and Iris Absolute alongside Leather is an unusual combination in a men’s fragrance — the floral notes give it a richness and complexity that most ambery spicy fragrances don’t have, without making it read as feminine. The leather is well-judged: present, not overpowering, and it transitions naturally into the base of Benzoin, Tonka Bean and Guaiac Wood. The drydown is warm, woody and slightly smoky — the kind of base that develops slowly on skin and improves as the day goes on. Longevity is a genuine strength at six to eight hours, with a sillage that projects well in cooler temperatures without becoming overbearing. This is an autumn and winter fragrance first, though it works for evening wear year-round.
How to Apply
Apply to pulse points — neck, wrists, chest. Man In Black has good natural projection so 2–3 sprays is sufficient; the sillage does the work. It performs particularly well in cooler air where the spice and wood notes deepen rather than fade.
