Hermès Eau de Citron Noir was created by Christine Nagel — Hermès’ in-house perfumer since 2016, succeeding Jean-Claude Ellena in a role that carries significant authority and creative continuity within the house. It was launched in 2018 as part of the Hermès Colognes Collection, a line of EdC-concentration fragrances that sit alongside the main Hermès fragrance portfolio. The composition is deliberately minimal — five declared notes across three stages — which is itself a design choice: in perfumery, a restrained note list typically indicates that each material has been selected to carry significant compositional weight rather than to contribute to a complex layered accord. The bottle is the rectangular lantern shape of the Hermès Colognes Collection, here in deep blue, presented in the house’s signature orange box. The defining and unusual ingredient is black lime: a dried citrus material from the Persian Gulf region that transforms the familiar citrus opening into something with unexpected depth and smoke.

How the Scent Develops

Top: Lemon, Citron, Black Lime Accord — the opening is citrus but not in the conventional sense. Lemon and citron together provide the expected brightness and sharpness of a citrus top. The Black Lime Accord is the defining and unexpected element: black lime (also known as loomi or noomi basra) is a lime that has been boiled in salt water and then sun-dried, a traditional Persian and Middle Eastern culinary ingredient. The drying process produces a complex, tart, slightly fermented, smoky and deeply aromatic material that has very little in common with fresh lime. In the context of a cologne opening, it introduces a dimension of darkness and smokiness into the citrus from the very first spray — this is not a conventional fresh citrus opening. It is a citrus opening that is simultaneously bright and shadowed.

Heart: Black Tea — a single-note heart, which is unusual and purposeful. Black tea in perfumery is an accord capturing the slightly tannic, smoky, earthy and gently floral quality of brewed black tea. It bridges the black lime of the opening — which shares a similar tart, slightly smoky register — and the guaiac wood of the base, creating a coherent aromatic through-line of smoke and dryness that runs from top to drydown. The black tea heart is not sweet; it is clean, slightly astringent and dry, which gives the composition its characteristic restraint.

Base: Guaiac Wood — a single-note base, again purposeful. Guaiac wood (from Bulnesia sarmientoi, a South American hardwood also known as palo santo’s close relative) has a smoky, slightly rosy, dry woody character distinct from the creamier sandalwood or drier cedarwood. It continues the smoky register of the black lime and black tea into the drydown without adding warmth or sweetness — the composition finishes as it begins: dry, woody, quietly complex and free of conventional fragrance sweetness.

When to Wear It

Eau de Citron Noir is a year-round fragrance with a particular affinity for spring through autumn — the citrus character and EdC concentration make it well suited to warmer weather, while the black lime and guaiac wood give it more structure and longevity than a conventional citrus cologne. It is appropriate for any setting and genuinely unisex — the composition has no inherently gendered register. At EdC concentration it rewards generous application and is practical to reapply throughout the day.

Questions Customers Ask

What is black lime and why does it matter in this fragrance?
Black lime (loomi or noomi basra) is a citrus fruit — typically lime — that has been boiled in brine and sun-dried until it turns dark and hard. The drying process concentrates and transforms the lime, producing a tart, slightly smoky, fermented, deeply complex aromatic material used throughout Persian, Iraqi and Gulf cooking. In perfumery it is an unusual and distinctive ingredient: it has the sharp tartness of fresh citrus but none of the brightness, and it adds a smoky, almost earthy dimension that conventional citrus materials cannot replicate. Nagel’s use of a black lime accord as the defining element of the opening is the single most compositionally interesting choice in Eau de Citron Noir and the primary reason the fragrance reads differently from other citrus colognes.

Why does the fragrance have so few notes?
Five notes across three stages is an unusually restrained note declaration. Christine Nagel and the Hermès approach to fragrance composition generally favours clarity and editorial restraint over complexity for its own sake — the Colognes Collection in particular is built around single-ingredient or minimal-note compositions that allow each material to be clearly perceived rather than blended into a composite accord. The minimal note list is a quality indicator, not a limitation: it means the black lime, black tea and guaiac wood are each fully present in the composition rather than competing with additional supporting notes.

Who is Christine Nagel?
Christine Nagel became Hermès’ in-house perfumer (maison parfumeur) in 2016, succeeding the celebrated Jean-Claude Ellena who held the role for thirteen years. She trained at Givaudan (one of the world’s major fragrance ingredient companies) and worked across multiple major houses before joining Hermès. The in-house perfumer role at Hermès is one of the most prestigious positions in the fragrance industry — the perfumer works exclusively for the house and has editorial and creative authority over the fragrance programme. Eau de Citron Noir was one of her earlier releases for the house.

Is it a good gift?
Yes — the Hermès name, the distinctive blue lantern bottle and the house’s signature orange box make the gift presentation immediately recognisable and considered. The unisex character makes it appropriate for any recipient. The compositional intelligence of the fragrance makes it particularly suited to someone who already appreciates quality fragrance and will understand what they’re receiving.
