The Scent

English Pear & Freesia opens with pear and melon — a soft, ripe, slightly watery fruitiness that reads as the freshness of just-picked autumn fruit rather than a sharp or synthetic fruit accord. The heart is white freesia and rose. Freesia in perfumery is a clean, slightly green-floral accord with a faintly soapy freshness — airy and delicate; white freesia specifically is the most clean-smelling and least assertive variety, with none of the heavier quality of yellow or orange freesia. The rose adds warmth and depth to the floral heart without pushing the fragrance into a conventional rose-floral direction. The base is patchouli, amber and woody notes. The patchouli here functions very differently from the dark, heavy patchouli in an oriental fragrance — used at a lighter concentration as a fixative and base blender, it adds diffusion and a soft earthiness that anchors the fruity-floral top without dominating. The overall effect is clean, soft, ripe and very wearable.

Why is it called an Eau de Cologne if it seems as strong as an EDP?
Jo Malone uses “Eau de Cologne” as their house designation for their core fragrance range — it does not correspond to the standard industry definition of EDC (typically 2–5% fragrance oil concentration, which is very light and short-lived). Jo Malone’s Colognes are formulated at a significantly higher fragrance oil concentration — closer to an EDP in performance — and have the longevity and sillage associated with a mid-to-high concentration EDP rather than a conventional light cologne. The “Cologne” designation is a brand convention, not a concentration indicator.

What is freesia and what does it smell like?
Freesia is a genus of flowering plants native to Africa, widely cultivated as a cut flower. In perfumery, freesia accord has a clean, fresh, slightly green-floral character — often described as crisp and airy, with a faint soapy freshness that makes it very wearable and non-offensive. White freesia specifically is the most delicate and clean-smelling variety. It is distinct from heavier florals like jasmine or tuberose; freesia reads light, modern and fresh rather than rich or indolic.

Is English Pear & Freesia an autumn fragrance only?
The fragrance was conceived around the English autumn harvest but it wears well across all seasons. The clean, fruity-floral character is light enough for spring and summer; the patchouli and amber base give it enough warmth for autumn and early winter.
