Montblanc Explorer Platinum was launched in 2023, created by Bruno Jovanovic — a Givaudan perfumer with credits across multiple major houses. Montblanc is a German luxury house with a primary heritage in fountain pens and leather goods; their fragrance line is produced under licence and has built a consistent following in the designer masculine space, with the Explorer line in particular performing well commercially. Explorer Platinum is distinctive for the deliberate minimalism of its composition: three notes, one per tier — violet leaves, clary sage, cedarwood. No supporting cast, no layered structure, no complexity by volume. This is a fragrance built on restraint, allowing each of the three materials to be heard clearly across the development. The bottle takes its textured silver sleeve from Montblanc's 1858 Geosphere watch — a direct design cross-reference between the house's horology and fragrance lines.
How the Scent Develops
Top: Violet Leaves — a single top note, and an unusual choice. Violet leaves are distinct from the violet flower: where the flower has a soft, powdery, slightly sweet floral character, the leaves have a sharper, greener, slightly metallic quality. In perfumery violet leaf is used for its distinctive cool, green, slightly ionone-adjacent transparency — it opens Explorer Platinum with a clean, modern green note that is immediately distinctive without being heavy. As a solo top note it defines the character of the opening completely.
Heart: Clary Sage — clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is an aromatic herb with a complex character: herbaceous, slightly earthy, with a warm hay-like quality and a faint lavender-adjacent note. It's been used in fine fragrance for decades as a bridging material — it connects green or citrus openings to woody bases without adding sweetness or florality. As the sole heart note it occupies the composition's middle register completely, transitioning the green violet leaf opening toward the cedar base with an aromatic, slightly medicinal warmth.
Base: Cedarwood — clean, dry and woody. Cedarwood as a sole base note provides the structural foundation without ornamentation — no musk to soften, no amber to sweeten, no vanilla to add warmth. The result is a dry, clean woody drydown that reflects the minimalist approach of the whole composition. The cedarwood persists as the fragrance settles and wears close to skin in its final stage.
When to Wear It
Explorer Platinum is one of the more genuinely versatile fragrances in tonight's catalogue — the green-herbaceous-woody structure is light enough for warmer months and clean enough for daytime and office wear, while the clary sage heart gives it enough substance for casual evenings. It doesn't have the seasonal restriction of the heavier orientals or leather masculines. The minimalist composition means it works as a background fragrance rather than a statement scent — present but not imposing.
Questions Customers Ask
Why does it only have three notes?
The three-note pyramid is a deliberate compositional choice rather than a limitation. Some of the most respected fragrances in fine perfumery use minimal note structures to allow each material to express itself fully without competition. With a single top, heart and base note, the development of Explorer Platinum is legible and unambiguous — you follow each note clearly as the fragrance moves through its stages. Whether this approach suits a customer's taste depends on whether they prefer complexity and layering or clarity and directness.
What is clary sage?
Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) is an aromatic herb cultivated primarily in southern Europe and Russia for its essential oil. In perfumery the oil has a warm, herbaceous, slightly earthy and hay-like character with a faint lavender adjacency. It's one of the classic aromatic materials in fine fragrance and is used in both masculine and feminine compositions as a bridging note. It's different from common sage, which is sharper and more medicinal; clary sage has a rounder, warmer quality.
What does violet leaf smell like compared to violet flower?
They are very different. The violet flower has a soft, powdery, slightly sweet and slightly candied floral character. Violet leaf has a sharper, greener, cooler, slightly metallic quality — it's used in perfumery for its transparent, modern green character rather than for any floral association. The two materials come from the same plant but smell completely different and are used for different compositional purposes.
Is it a good gift?
Yes — the Montblanc name is widely recognised and respected, the silver-textured bottle is distinctive and premium in presentation, and the minimalist green-woody composition has broad appeal among men who prefer clean, fresh fragrances without sweetness or heaviness. At £50.99 for 100ml it represents strong value for a designer EDP with genuine brand equity.
