Versace Dylan Purple Pour Femme Eau de Parfum was launched in 2021, created by Dominique Ropion of IFF — first appearance in the session, and the most technically accomplished perfumer to appear in it. Ropion’s portfolio is among the most critically celebrated in contemporary fine fragrance: Carnal Flower (Frédéric Malle, 2005 — widely regarded as one of the greatest Tuberose compositions ever created, built around a Tuberose absolute of exceptional purity and intensity), Portrait of a Lady (Frédéric Malle, 2010, co-created with Anne Flipo and Pierre Negrin — one of the most commercially and critically successful independent niche feminines of the past two decades), Alien (Thierry Mugler, 2005 — the Jasmine Sambac and ambery woody synthetic feminine that became one of the most polarising and commercially successful launches of the 2000s), and Ysatis (Givenchy, 1984 — one of the defining chypre orientals of the 1980s). Dylan Purple represents Ropion at the opposite end of his creative range from Carnal Flower: a brightly accessible, commercially focused fruity-floral for a fashion house, technically sophisticated in its construction but immediate and approachable in its effect. The composition’s most notable feature is the transparency of its synthetic material disclosure: where most commercial fragrances list only botanical sources in their note pyramids, Dylan Purple names six of its ten materials as specific IFF proprietary synthetics by trade name, offering a rare window into the construction of a contemporary fine fragrance. Dylan Purple is the chromatic counterpart to Versace Dylan Blue Pour Femme within the Versace Dylan feminine range — purple to blue, warmer and more floral-fruity in character to Dylan Blue’s fresher aquatic-floral direction. Versace — the Italian luxury fashion house founded in Milan in 1978 by Gianni Versace, since 1997 led by his sister Donatella Versace, acquired by Capri Holdings in 2018 — has maintained a fragrance programme built around its characteristic aesthetic: bold, colour-expressive, maximally glamorous, with the Medusa head motif and Baroque-influenced visual language informing bottle design across the range.

The opening of Bergamot, Orange and Pear is the most conventionally fresh and immediately approachable of Ropion’s top tiers in the session — three fruit-citrus materials establishing a bright, juicy, accessible opening with none of the austere complexity of his niche work. Orange here as freshly harvested — a specific quality designation suggesting a greener, more volatile, less sweet citrus quality than a ripe, fully developed orange. Pear returning from its appearances in multiple feminine compositions across the session. The heart of Freesia, Mahonial® and Pomarose® is where the IFF proprietary synthetic architecture becomes most apparent and most compositionally significant. Freesia returning from its earlier appearance in the session (Hugo Boss Just Different — its first occurrence in a masculine context); here in its more conventional feminine-heart role, its clean, slightly sweet, gently fruity-floral quality amplified by two IFF proprietary materials. Mahonial® (IFF) — a radiant, white-floral musky material with exceptional diffusion; its function here is to amplify and project the Freesia’s clean floral quality, giving the heart a diffusive radiance that a natural Freesia material alone could not achieve. Pomarose® (IFF) — a fresh, slightly fruity, slightly jammy rose-like material; its use here adds rose facets to the heart without requiring a natural rose absolute or synthetic Geraniol/Citronellol construction, contributing a fresh, fruity rose quality that bridges the citrus top and the ambery base. The base of Belambre®, Ambrofix™, Iso E Super, Cedarwood and Silkolide® is the most technically complex and most IFF-material-dense base in the session. Belambre® (IFF) — an amber-woody synthetic with a clean, warm, slightly powdery ambery character, contributing the base’s warm, enveloping quality. Ambrofix™ (IFF) — a synthetic ambergris-adjacent material derived from the same labdane diterpene biosynthetic pathway as natural ambergris (the whale-derived substance now almost entirely replaced by synthetics in fine fragrance); Ambrofix has a clean, slightly woody, slightly musky, gently marine-adjacent warmth that is among IFF’s most valued and widely used base materials. Iso E Super (IFF) — first named appearance as a primary disclosed material in the session; one of the most significant and widely used aromatic synthetics in the history of modern perfumery, a woody, slightly cedar-like, slightly smoky, characteristically diffusive material that has been present in hundreds of major compositions since its development in the 1970s, most famously deployed as the sole ingredient in Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 (2006), where its skin-reactive, individually variable quality became the conceptual basis of the entire product. Silkolide® (IFF) — a musk-fruity material with a soft, silky, slightly fruity-sweet musky quality, giving the drydown its characteristic smooth, skin-close finish.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Two to three sprays; Dylan Purple has good projection from the Mahonial® and Iso E Super base with a clean, warm drydown. The Bergamot, Orange and Pear opening is immediately bright and fresh; the Freesia, Mahonial® and Pomarose® heart arrives within ten minutes as the composition’s most diffusive and radiant phase. The Belambre®, Ambrofix™ and Iso E Super base lasts eight to ten hours on skin.
