Hermès H24 Eau de Toilette was launched in 2021, created by Christine Nagel — Master Perfumer at Hermès since 2016, appointed to one of the most prestigious positions in world perfumery, succeeding Jean-Claude Ellena, whose 12-year tenure at Hermès produced some of the most critically admired compositions of the 2000s and 2010s (including Terre d’Hermès, which appears across multiple gift sets in the Oh So Luxe range). H24 is Nagel’s most fully realised masculine composition for the house — a clean, architecturally precise aromatic green fragrance that takes its name from the 24-hour day: a composition designed not for a single occasion but to accompany the wearer through every context from morning to night. At five materials across four distinct notes — with the top and base each represented by a single material — H24 is one of the most minimal and compositionally ambitious constructions in the masculine collection, its apparent simplicity concealing an extraordinary level of material specificity and technical sophistication. The bottle — aerodynamic in form, made from recycled glass, with packaging in 100% recycled and recyclable paper with a lime-green stripe — is fully refillable in both the 50ml and 100ml sizes, the most complete sustainability programme of any masculine in the collection. The full Hermès range at Oh So Luxe includes Eau d’Orange Verte EdC, Eau de Citron Noir EdC and Barenia EDP.
The opening of Aromatic Green is the most deliberately and honestly non-specific top-note descriptor in the session — even less defined than Armani Code Man’s ‘Citrus’. Nagel has described the opening as inspired by the smell of a freshly snapped plant stem: the slightly milky, green, herbaceous quality of a living plant at the moment of rupture, before any specific botanical character becomes dominant. This is not a citrus opening, not a standard aromatic opening — it is the closest approximation in mainstream masculine perfumery to the literal smell of a plant being broken. The heart of Clary Sage, Narcissus and Rosewood is the most botanically complex and expensive heart in the masculine collection. Clary Sage returning — encountered in Versace Man Eau Fraîche’s heart — here in a more prominent and contextually different role, its clean, slightly lavender-adjacent herbal quality providing the heart’s aromatic structure. Narcissus — Narcissus poeticus and related species, first appearance in the session — is one of the most complex, costly and technically demanding floral materials in perfumery: the natural absolute (the only form that captures its full character) costs significantly more per kilogram than almost any other botanical used in fragrance, and its olfactory profile is uniquely layered — simultaneously green, floral, slightly indolic (with a faint animalic warmth that connects it to jasmine and tuberose), hay-like, and waxy with a pollen-like quality that is impossible to reproduce synthetically at equivalent complexity. Its presence here in a mainstream masculine composition is a marker of the seriousness and cost of Hermès’s approach to H24. Rosewood — Aniba rosaeodora, the Amazonian timber species now listed on CITES Appendix II due to historical overharvesting — has a warm, slightly woody, faintly floral, slightly camphoraceous character; its presence here likely indicates a sustainably sourced programme consistent with the composition’s wider environmental commitments. The sole base note of Sclarène is the most technically specific and unusual base material in the entire session. Sclarène is a synthetic aromatic molecule derived from Sclareol, which is itself a natural diterpene alcohol extracted from Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea — the same plant as the heart’s Clary Sage, creating a vertical botanical connection across the composition’s tiers). Sclarène has a warm, slightly woody, distinctly metallic, clean quality that Nagel has described as evoking the smell of freshly ironed linen — not a floral metallic or a cold metallic, but the specific warmth-with-crispness of hot iron on clean fabric, a sensation-memory rather than a botanical reference. Used here as the sole base note rather than as a modifier, it gives H24’s drydown a quality found in no other masculine in the collection: warm, clean, slightly metallic, with an almost tactile textile quality that is simultaneously intimate and abstract.
How to Wear
Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, chest. Two sprays; H24 has light projection with a refined, skin-close development. The Aromatic Green opening is immediate and unlike any standard citrus or herbal top; the Clary Sage, Narcissus and Rosewood heart arrives within ten to fifteen minutes as the composition’s most complex phase. The Sclarène base develops over the first hour into its characteristic warm, metallic-linen quality, lasting five to seven hours. The 100ml refillable is the better long-term value; the 50ml refillable is the ideal starting size for a first encounter with H24’s distinctive character.
