Versace Crystal Noir Eau de Parfum

Versace Crystal Noir Eau de Parfum was launched in 2004, created by Alberto Morillas of Firmenich — returning for his second appearance in the session, having previously created Bvlgari Omnia Coral EDT (2012). The range between those two compositions illustrates the full breadth of Morillas’ work: Omnia Coral is a light, tropically bright floral-fruity for summer; Crystal Noir EDP is a warmly spiced floral oriental for autumn and winter evenings. His capacity to work across this full range — from the most tropically fresh to the most warmly dark and oriental — is a consistent theme of his position as one of the most commercially range-versatile perfumers in the session, alongside Acqua di Giò pour Homme (1996), Marc Jacobs Daisy (2007), Flowerbomb (2005) and CK One (1994). Crystal Noir sits at the most oriental and most evening-focused point of the Versace feminine range at Oh So Luxe — in deliberate contrast to Dylan Purple’s summer brightness and Dylan Blue’s fresh aquatic florality. The ‘Crystal’ name references the faceted, gem-cut bottle aesthetic that unifies the Crystal Noir range; the ‘Noir’ references both the darker, more nocturnal character of the composition and the darker visual register of the bottle and campaign. The EDP is the fuller, warmer, more concentrated version of the Crystal Noir composition; the lighter Crystal Noir EDT is available at Oh So Luxe for those seeking the same composition in a fresher, less dense register.

The opening of Cardamom, Pepper and Ginger is the most assertively and multiply spiced top tier in the Versace feminine range — and the first time in the session that all three primary spice materials (Cardamom, Pepper and Ginger) appear together in a single top tier. Cardamom returning from its multiple masculine appearances, here in a specifically feminine context for the first time — its warm, aromatic, slightly sweet-spiced quality amplified by Pepper’s clean, sharper bite and Ginger’s warm, citrus-spiced, slightly earthy character; together the three create an opening of considerable spiced warmth that is both immediately distinctive and unambiguously oriental in its register. The heart of Gardenia, Peony and Orange Flower is the most richly and diversely white-floral heart in the Versace feminine range. Gardenia returning from its session debut on Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia — here framed by spice rather than fruit, giving its characteristic creamy, coconut-waxy, white-floral quality a warmer and more sensuous context. Peony — Paeonia species, Paeoniaceae family, first named appearance in the session as a primary heart material — the peony flower, like Gardenia, cannot be effectively steam-distilled; the delicate structure of the petals does not survive the distillation process, and its natural absolute via solvent extraction yields limited material; Peony in fine fragrance is therefore almost always constructed as a synthetic accord, typically blending rose-adjacent, slightly fruity, clean floral materials (Phenylethyl Alcohol, Geraniol, light fruity esters) to recreate the characteristic airy, fresh, delicately rosy, slightly sweet-fruity quality of the flower; the Peony accord here sits between the Gardenia’s creamier warmth and the Orange Flower’s more distinctly citrus-floral brightness. Orange Flower (Citrus aurantium var. amara) returning from its earlier appearances as Orange Blossom — here in the EDP context, where greater concentration gives it a richer, more intensely floral and slightly honeyed quality than in EDT concentrations. The base of Amber, Sandalwood and Musk is the most classically constructed oriental base in the Versace feminine range — three warm, mutually reinforcing materials providing a rich, smooth, lasting drydown that sustains the composition’s warmth and depth through the full development.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. One to two sprays; Crystal Noir EDP has moderate to strong projection from the spiced top and good longevity from the Amber and Sandalwood base. The Cardamom, Pepper and Ginger opening is immediately warm and distinctively spiced; the Gardenia, Peony and Orange Flower heart arrives within fifteen minutes as the most floral and most densely white-floral phase. The Amber, Sandalwood and Musk base lasts eight to twelve hours on skin. For the lighter version of the same composition, Crystal Noir EDT is the fresher, less dense alternative; for the brighter Versace feminine direction, Dylan Blue Pour Femme EDP is the contrast.
