YSL Opium for Men Eau de Toilette 100ml

YSL Opium for Men Eau de Toilette was launched in 1995, created by Jacques Cavallier (Firmenich) — appearing here for his fourth time in the session, having also created L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme (1994), YSL M7 (2002, co-created with Annick Ménardo) and Emporio Armani Diamonds for Men EDT (2008). His 1994–2008 Firmenich period represents one of the most compositionally diverse runs by a single perfumer in the session, spanning from the clean aquatic of L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme through the oriental-exotic of Opium pour Homme and M7 to the spicy-woody precision of Diamonds for Men. Opium pour Homme takes its name from the legendary Opium pour Femme (1977, created by Jean-Louis Sieuzac) — one of the most culturally provocative fragrances of the 20th century, whose 1978 launch event on a tall ship in New York Harbour was met with protests from Chinese-American communities over the name’s associations; the masculine counterpart arrived 18 years later, in 1995, and while it carries the Opium name and the house’s orientalist heritage, its composition is a distinct masculine interpretation rather than a direct counterpart. At seven materials across three tiers, Opium pour Homme is the most precisely calibrated oriental spicy composition in the YSL masculine range at Oh So Luxe — a tighter, more focused pyramid than M7’s eight materials, with each tier reduced to two or three materials that work with exceptional mutual reinforcement. The opening of Blackcurrant and Star Anise is the most immediately distinctive and exotically composed top-note pairing in the YSL masculine range. Blackcurrant returning — encountered in several feminine compositions earlier in the session — here in its most unexpected masculine context, its dark, slightly tart, cassis-like quality (from the characteristic catty, slightly sulphurous facets of blackcurrant that give it its distinctive sharpness) cutting through and contrasting with the sweetness of what follows. Star Anise — Illicium verum, native to southern China and northeast Vietnam, first appearance in the session — is dominated by trans-anethole, the same primary aromatic compound as European anise and fennel, but with an intensity and complexity in the Star Anise form that is distinctively more powerful, warmer, and with additional spice facets beyond the pure liquorice-sweet of simpler anise materials; its combination with Blackcurrant creates a simultaneously dark-fruity and sweetly exotic opening that is the most geographically and culturally specific top-note pairing in the masculine collection. The heart of Galanga and Pepper is the most botanically specific spice heart in the collection. Galanga (Galangal, Alpinia galanga or Alpinia officinarum) — a rhizome from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), native to Southeast Asia, central to Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian and other regional cuisines — first named appearance in the session; its fragrance profile has a warm, spicy character that is simultaneously ginger-adjacent (sharing the same botanical family) and distinctly more complex: where Ginger (encountered in Hugo Boss The Scent) has a relatively clean, sharp, biting warmth, Galanga has an additional pine-like, slightly camphoraceous, earthy facet that gives it a richer, more layered spice quality that is genuinely unusual in Western masculine perfumery. Alongside Pepper, Galanga creates a spice heart of exceptional botanical specificity — two warming, aromatic spice materials with overlapping warmth but distinctly different olfactory characters. The base of Bourbon Vanilla, Tolu Balsam and Atlas Cedar is the warmest and most balsamic base in the YSL masculine range. Bourbon Vanilla — vanilla from Madagascar and Réunion (historically the Bourbon Islands), considered the highest quality vanilla variety, with the most complex, creamy, slightly smoky, richly vanillic profile of any vanilla growing region. Tolu Balsam — Myroxylon balsamum var. balsamum, from the Tolú region of Colombia on the Caribbean coast, first appearance in the session — a resinous balsam used in perfumery since the 17th century with a warm, sweet, vanilla-adjacent, cinnamon-inflected, slightly fruity balsamic character; distinct from Peru Balsam (same genus, different variety) in its slightly lighter, more delicate warmth. The combination of Bourbon Vanilla and Tolu Balsam in the base gives Opium pour Homme its characteristic warm, sweet, balsamic oriental depth — two vanilla-adjacent materials reinforcing each other’s warmth from different botanical origins. Atlas Cedar — Cedrus atlantica, from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria — grounding the base in clean, dry woody structure.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, chest, neck. Two sprays; Opium pour Homme has moderate projection with very good longevity from the Bourbon Vanilla and Tolu Balsam base. The Blackcurrant and Star Anise opening is immediately exotic and distinctive; the Galanga and Pepper heart arrives within fifteen minutes as the composition’s most characterful phase. The Bourbon Vanilla, Tolu Balsam and Atlas Cedar base lasts seven to ten hours on skin. This is firmly a cold-weather, evening fragrance. For the most adventurous oriental in the YSL masculine range, M7 EDT is the oud-forward choice; for the house’s most iconoclastic masculine, Kouros EDT.
