Jimmy Choo — the shoe and accessories house founded in London in 1996 by Tamara Mellon and Malaysian couture shoemaker Jimmy Choo — launched its debut fragrance in 2011, and the composition makes a deliberate statement about the house’s positioning: exotic, sensual, and premium without being austere. The fragrance family designation — fruity chypre — is worth examining. The classical chypre structure (Bergamot top, Labdanum and Oakmoss base, named after the island of Cyprus where the ancient formula originated) had been significantly disrupted by IFRA restrictions on Oakmoss by 2011; ‘fruity chypre’ in this period indicates a modern reconstruction of the chypre idea using contemporary synthetic base materials rather than traditional Oakmoss, with fruit notes added to the top to give the structure its accessible, bright opening. What makes this composition unusual within that category is the base: Toffee as a base note is rare in a chypre construction — the combination of gourmand sweetness with the earthy, spiced depth of Indonesian Patchouli produces a base that is simultaneously warm and oriental-adjacent without being a conventional oriental. The result is a composition that reads more uniquely than the ‘fruity chypre’ descriptor alone might suggest. The opening of Pear, Italian Freesia and Tiger Orchid establishes the exotic register immediately. Pear returning from the Daisy family with its soft, slightly buttery sweetness; Italian Freesia returning from Gucci Rush and Dolce Blue Jasmine, its light, slightly citrusy effervescence here in a warmer, richer context. Tiger Orchid — Grammatophyllum speciosum, the largest orchid species in the world and native to Southeast Asia — appears for the first time in the session; it is used in perfumery as a synthetic accord rather than a direct extraction (the flower itself does not yield usable essential oil through conventional means), with a heavy, sweet, slightly spicy, exotic floral character quite different from the lighter, more translucent orchid accords used in contemporary fresh florals. Its presence in both the top and heart means it is the thread that runs through the entire composition rather than a single-tier contributor. The heart of Sambac Jasmine, Indonesian Patchouli and Tiger Orchid continues the exotic, heavily floral register — Sambac Jasmine returning from J’adore, Gucci Bloom and Dolce Blue Jasmine, here in its warmest and most richly oriental context; Indonesian Patchouli returning from Cool Water Woman, the same Indonesian-sourced Patchouli with its deep, earthy, slightly sweet, camphoraceous quality. The base of Toffee, Cedarwood and Indonesian Patchouli (continuing from the heart into the base) is the most distinctive element of the composition. Toffee — first appearance in the session — is a warm, sweet, slightly buttery caramelised sugar quality, distinctly gourmand in character; its combination with Indonesian Patchouli’s earthiness and Cedarwood’s clean woody structure produces a base that is warm, deeply sensual and considerably more complex than the simple chypre-fruity label would suggest.

How to Wear

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. Jimmy Choo EDP has good projection and excellent longevity — two sprays is sufficient. The Pear and Freesia opening is clean and immediate; the Tiger Orchid heart arrives within fifteen minutes and deepens steadily. The Toffee and Patchouli base develops fully over the first hour and lasts eight to ten hours on skin with a warm, sweet, earthy trail.
