Revlon Fire & Ice Eau de Cologne 50ml

Fire & Ice is one of the most recognisable names in Revlon’s history — the original Fire & Ice was a cosmetics campaign launched in 1952, photographed by Richard Avedon with model Dorian Leigh, that became one of the most celebrated and widely reproduced beauty advertisements in American history. The fragrance, launched in 1994, extends that identity into scent: the name promises a tension between contrasts — warm and cool, bold and restrained, spiced and fresh — and the composition delivers on it with an oriental floral structure that opens bright and citrus-forward before settling into a warm, incense-and-amber base. It sits comfortably in the same 1990s oriental floral tradition as Calvin Klein Escape, though with a darker and more resinous base character. As an Eau de Cologne — the lightest fragrance concentration — it carries its complexity with a lighter touch than the EDPs and EDTs written today; longevity is two to four hours on skin, and reapplication through the day is advisable for continuous wear.

The opening of Tangerine, Orange Blossom and Osmanthus is immediately warm and slightly exotic — Osmanthus appearing here in the top accord rather than the heart as it did in Alfred Sung EDT, its characteristic apricot-and-peach fruitiness giving the citrus opening a soft, fruity warmth that makes this feel richer from the first spray than a standard citrus top. Orange Blossom’s cool floral quality — familiar from Phantom Intense EDP where it appeared in its ‘frosted’ interpretation — here in its warmer, more classic form. The heart is the most botanically interesting in the collection: Orchid, Tuberose, Magnolia and Narcissus. Orchid in fragrance is always a constructed accord rather than a natural extraction — orchids have no scent that can be captured by conventional extraction methods, so ‘orchid’ is a perfumer’s interpretation, typically soft, slightly powdery and vaguely tropical. Tuberose returns from Clinique Aromatics Elixir and Estée Lauder Beautiful — creamy, heady and intensely white floral. Magnolia adds a soft, slightly lemony, clean floral note. Narcissus is the rarest and most distinctive note in the heart — one of the most expensive naturals in perfumery, intensely green, slightly animalic and watery, with a cool, almost underwater quality that is quite unlike any other white floral and entirely unmistakable once encountered. Its presence here, even in a 1994 mass-market Eau de Cologne, is a genuine mark of compositional ambition. The base of Amber, Musk, Incense and Exotic Woods is warm, resinous and dark — Incense returning from Aromatics Elixir’s base, adding its smoky, slightly sacred depth; Exotic Woods a catch-all descriptor for the kind of warm, complex woody base materials — sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver variants — that give oriental fragrances their characteristic depth and longevity.

How to Apply

Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, décolletage. As an Eau de Cologne, Fire & Ice is lighter in concentration than the EDPs and EDTs in the collection — apply three to four sprays for best effect and reapply after three to four hours for continuous wear. The osmanthus and orange blossom opening settles quickly; the tuberose and narcissus heart develops within fifteen minutes.
